PROJECTS

AMI Patisserie

Amid an area of central Singapore defined by historic black-and-white colonial bungalows stands Ami Patisserie, a modern Japanese cafe carved out of a former ancillary structure.

To pay homage to the chef-owner’s roots, the storefront borrowed the design language of traditional Kyoto-style wooden townhouses, known as Kyo-machiya. Aarticle clad the front facade in a wooden screen and installed a flat roof to evoke simplicity and humility, values dear to the client.

Counter design with garden view at AMI Patisserie, blending interior and nature, by Aarticle.

Embracing Nature In Design

As the single-storey structure sits on the corner of a verdant plot of land, the decision was made not to extend the screen across other facades. Instead, large-format picture windows grace one side of the building in order to create a dialogue with the garden.

On the approach, the resulting edifice is both distinct from its neighbours yet unobtrusive within its residential setting.

Refined Simplicity with Curves

The interior was designed to be pared down, just as chefs utilise muted flatware as a canvas to display their culinary creations. Aarticle continued the use of wooden elements in structure (ceiling, flooring, columns), fixture (screen doors, shelves, counters), and furniture. Complementary cream tones on the walls, floors and tabletops create a warm, inviting atmosphere.

To further the interior’s appeal, Aarticle employed generous curves on features such as the main counter, retail corner, and private dining room. This not only played up the sensuality of the chef’s famed desserts, but also acted as a counterpoint to the rectilinear footprint of the space.
